Podcasts make me feel like I’m back in the days before TV. You know what I’m talking about. Everybody gathers around the radio for their favorite show to come on and they turn up the dial and listen intently to every word. That’s totally how I feel since discovering podcasts. Except, I stream my radio shows from my iPhone and I can listen to them pretty much whenever I want; usually while driving or doing dishes. But, John and I have been known to keep the TV off in the evening and just listen to a podcast. We have been trying to watch less TV lately, so these are a great alternative while still having a form of entertainment. They just make my brain work a little more than TV. 🙂
I think I’m a little late to this podcast bandwagon. I had heard of podcasts here and there but always assumed they were super boring and narrated in monotone. That is until John told me about Serial. I was so immersed that I listened to probably four episodes in the first day while I folded and put away laundry. It made laundry fun. That’s not easy to do.
Since discovering Serial, I keep finding new podcasts to listen to. Here are 5 that are my favorite at the moment.
1. Serial-Season 1
Duh. The one that started me on the slippery slope that is podcast world. The host (Sarah Koenig) investigates the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee, a high school student in Baltimore. Her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was convicted and is currently serving a life sentence, though remaining steadfast in his innocence. Koenig looks deeper into the evidence, trying to get answers to many unknown questions and it is so interesting! If you love murder mystery in the slightest, this one is for you. Season two is coming out soon and will be a different storyline. I can’t wait!
2. Invisibilia
This one is all about the invisible forces of life- ideas, beliefs, assumptions and emotions. I found this one through a flow chart titled “Serial Ended: What Now?” ( I can’t find it anymore). I followed the path labeled something like “You want to feel like you are best friends with the host”. Totally hit the nail on the head. The two hosts of Invisibilia are funny and super relatable and I love their style of broadcasting; it’s a mix of story telling and scientific fact. It makes you think a little harder about all the things that affect who you are and what you do.
This one kind of came to me at just the perfect moment. I was having a really tough time parenting. I was worn down and felt like I was totally failing my kids. I don’t even remember how I found this, but I listened to the episode from February 4, 2015-Hope For the Weary Mom. It was like she was speaking right to me! Now, I just love hearing her interviews and I feel so encouraged and uplifted every time I listen to this one. Parenting is hard stuff. She makes me feel like I’m not totally screwing up my kids.
This is a cool small, creative business focused podcast. Elise is a blogger, entrepreneur and Etsy shop owner. She interviews a lot of people about their success in business and has a lot of insight and experience when it comes to running a small business of her own. It’s like having a friend who knows exactly what you are going through and it breaks through all of the noise of advice when figuring out how to run an Etsy shop. This is a great motivating tool for me to step out of my box sometimes and try something new even though it is terrifying.
5. Mystery Show
John just introduced me to this one last night. We knocked out three episodes while watching the sunset in our backyard and unsuccessfully trying to start a little bonfire. Starlee Kine literally solves people’s mysteries on this podcast. I was amazed at how in the heck she solved the three I listened to. Also, she can start a deep conversation with anybody (see: episode 2 where she chats with a customer service rep). The amount of information she gets out of people in such a short time is amazing. This is a fun one to chill to and really makes me feel like I’m watching a show.
So, there you have it! Those are my five favorite podcasts of the moment. A few of them are on break right now, but have their episodes in the feed. Let me know if you check any of them out and what you think of them!
Do you listen to podcasts, too? What are your favorites! I’m always looking for new ones to listen to!
Have a great day!
